Step 1: Check why you were declined

Do a status check at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status. Find the declined month and write down the reason that SASSA gives.

Then decide whether an appeal makes sense:

Your situationShould you appeal?
The reason is wrong. For example, SASSA says you have income, but you do notYes
The money in your account was a once-off gift, loan or refundYes
Your UIF payments or NSFAS funding have endedYes
Your status is still pendingNo. Wait for a decision first
You did receive more than R624 that monthNo. Wait for next month’s check
You receive another SASSA grant for yourselfNo. The decline is correct

Step 2: Lodge your appeal online

  1. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals.
  2. Enter your ID number and the cellphone number you applied with.
  3. Request a PIN, then enter the PIN that arrives by SMS.
  4. Select the month you want to appeal.
  5. Choose the reason for your appeal from the list.
  6. Submit your appeal and keep the confirmation SMS.

Repeat these steps for every month that was declined.

Step 3: Keep your proof ready

ITSAA checks your details again. It may ask you for proof, so keep the right documents ready.

Decline reasonUseful proof
Alternative income source identifiedBank statements for that month and an affidavit that explains the deposit
UIF registeredA letter or statement that shows your UIF claim has ended
NSFAS registeredA letter from NSFAS that confirms your funding has ended
Government payroll registeredA termination letter or your final payslip
Identity verification failedYour ID, and proof that your details at Home Affairs are correct
Existing SASSA grantProof that the other grant has stopped

Step 4: Track your appeal

Go back to srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals and enter the same ID number and cellphone number. The page shows the status of each month that you appealed.

Appeal statusWhat it means
PendingITSAA has not decided yet
ApprovedYour appeal succeeded, and SASSA will pay you for that month
DeclinedYour appeal did not succeed

What happens after the decision?

  • If your appeal succeeds: SASSA pays the R370 for each month that ITSAA approves. Make sure that your banking details are correct so that the payment does not fail.
  • If your appeal fails: the ITSAA decision is the last step in the SRD appeal process. If you still believe it is wrong, you can ask the High Court to review it. Get legal advice first, for example from Legal Aid South Africa.

While you wait, SASSA still assesses you every new month. An appeal for one month does not stop a later month from being approved. Do not submit a new application while your appeal is open.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Missing the deadline
  • Appealing a month that is still pending
  • Appealing only one month when several were declined
  • Using a different cellphone number from the one you applied with
  • Paying someone to appeal for you. Appeals are free, and nobody can speed them up

Frequently asked questions

Is an appeal the same as a reconsideration?

Some people still call an SRD appeal a “reconsideration”. Either way, you use the same official appeals page.

Can I appeal after 90 days?

No. After 90 days, you lose the right to appeal that month. Appeal as soon as you see the decline.

Can someone else lodge my appeal?

A person you trust may help you to use the website, but the appeal must be lodged with your own ID number and cellphone number. Never share your PIN with a stranger.

Do I need a lawyer?

No. The online appeal is designed for you to complete on your own.

Do I keep getting paid during an appeal?

An appeal covers only the month that was declined. SASSA pays you for any other month that it approves.
