SRD decline reasons explained
When a month is declined, SASSA shows a reason. These are the reasons you are most likely to see.
| Reason shown | In plain language | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| means_income_source_identified | More than R624 flowed into your bank account in that month | If the money was a gift, loan or refund, appeal. If it was real income, wait for next month’s check |
| alternative_income_source_identified | SASSA’s records show another source of income for you | Appeal if you had no income in that month |
| identity_verification_failed | The details you gave do not match Home Affairs records | Check your name and ID number, complete the facial verification, then appeal |
| existing_sassa_grant | You already receive another social grant for yourself | The decline is correct, unless that grant has ended |
| uif_registered | Records show a UIF registration or payment in that period | Appeal if you received no UIF payment |
| nsfas_registered | Records show NSFAS funding in your name | Appeal if your funding has ended |
| gov_payroll_registered | Records show that a government institution employed you in that period | Appeal if you no longer work there |
| age_outside_range | You are younger than 18, or you are 60 or older | At 60, apply for the Older Persons Grant instead |
| deceased_record_on_id | Home Affairs records wrongly show your ID number as deceased | Visit Home Affairs to correct the record, then appeal |
| debtor | SASSA says it paid you for a month in which you did not qualify | Contact SASSA. Appeal if you believe this is wrong |
| referred_safps | Your details are flagged on a fraud prevention database | Contact SASSA to find out what it needs from you |
Why does my status change from month to month?
SASSA does not decide once for the whole year. It checks every applicant again each month against Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, NSFAS and bank records.
That is why you can be approved in one month and declined in the next. A single deposit that takes you over R624 is enough to change the result for that month.
Good to know: a decline applies only to that month. It does not cancel your application.
What to do if your status is pending for too long
- Wait about a week, then check again. Most pending months are resolved within two weeks.
- Make sure that your cellphone number and banking details are up to date.
- Check whether SASSA sent you a link to verify your identity.
- If the month is still pending after a month, call 0800 60 10 11.
Approved, but no pay date or no money?
- No pay date yet: this is normal early in the month. SASSA adds pay dates closer to the payment period, late in the month.
- The pay date has passed: check that your bank account is open, active and in your own name.
- Still no money after seven working days: call 0800 60 10 11 and ask SASSA to trace the payment.
Frequently asked questions
Does “approved” mean that I have been paid?
No. It means that you qualify for that month. The money arrives on or shortly after your pay date.
Can I be approved one month and declined the next?
Yes. SASSA checks you again every month, so the result can change.
Does a decline cancel my application?
No. A decline applies to one month only. SASSA assesses you again the next month.
What does “referred” mean?
SASSA has flagged your application for a manual review. Payment is paused until the review is finished.
How do I appeal a declined month?
