Who qualifies for the SRD R370 grant?

You may qualify if you:

  • Are a South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee, asylum seeker or special permit holder
  • Are aged 18 to 59
  • Are unemployed and have no other financial support
  • Receive less than R624 a month
  • Do not receive another social grant for yourself
  • Do not receive UIF payments or NSFAS funding
  • Do not live in a government-funded institution

Good to know: if you receive a Child Support Grant for a child in your care, you can still apply for yourself.

What you need before you apply

  • Your 13-digit South African ID number, or your asylum seeker file number or special permit number
  • A cellphone number that you use every day. SASSA sends your one-time PIN and your updates to this number
  • Your name and surname, exactly as they appear on your ID
  • Your home address
  • A bank account in your own name, or a cellphone number registered in your own name for cash send

How to apply for the SRD R370 grant: step by step

  1. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za. Check that the address ends in .gov.za.
  2. Choose your applicant type: South African ID Holders, or Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders.
  3. Enter your cellphone number and request an SMS.
  4. Enter the one-time PIN (OTP) that arrives by SMS.
  5. Fill in your personal details exactly as they appear on your ID.
  6. Answer the questions about your work and income honestly.
  7. Read and accept the declaration and consent.
  8. Choose how you want to be paid, and enter your banking details.
  9. Submit your application, and keep the confirmation SMS.

Verify your identity

Since September 2025, SRD applicants must also pass a facial verification check. It takes about a minute.

  1. SASSA sends a verification link by SMS.
  2. Open the link and hold your ID up to the camera.
  3. Place your face inside the frame on the screen.
  4. Follow the prompts, such as blinking or turning your head.

For the best result, use good light, take off your hat or sunglasses and hold the phone steady. If the check keeps failing, visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID.

What happens after you apply?

  • Your status shows “pending”. SASSA checks your details against Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, NSFAS and bank records.
  • You get a result for each month. Each month is either approved or declined.
  • If you are approved, you get a pay date. SASSA pays the SRD grant late in each month.
  • You do not reapply every month. SASSA checks you again each month on its own. Keep your cellphone number and banking details up to date, and reconfirm your details if SASSA asks you to.

To follow your application, do a status check at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Typing your name differently from how it appears on your ID
  • Using another person’s cellphone number or bank account
  • Applying while you still receive UIF payments or NSFAS funding
  • Submitting more than one application
  • Paying a “helper” to apply for you. The application is free

Need help to apply?

If you cannot use the website, call the toll-free helpline on 0800 60 10 11, or ask for help at your nearest SASSA office.

Frequently asked questions

Is the SRD R370 application free?

Yes. SASSA never charges a fee to apply, to check your status or to appeal.

Can I apply if I have never worked?

Yes. The grant is for unemployed adults with little or no income, whether or not they have worked before.

Can I apply if I receive a Child Support Grant?

Yes. A Child Support Grant is paid for the child, so it does not stop you from applying for yourself.

Can foreign nationals apply?

Refugees, asylum seekers and special permit holders can apply. The SRD website has a separate option for them.

What happens when I turn 60?

The SRD grant stops at 60. From that age, you can apply for the Older Persons Grant instead.

How long does approval take?

It varies. SASSA has to check several databases, so a first result can take a few weeks.
